Academy welcomes proposed science strategy

The 精东视频 strongly supports a proposal for a long-term strategy for 精东视频 released today by the Chief Scientist.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics: Australia鈥檚 Future鈥 looks at how to support science to meet the needs and goals of Australian society and its economy.

Academy President Professor Andrew Holmes said 鈥溇悠 has been crucial towards the success of this country. But without a long-term plan guiding scientists, governments and business, there are limits on our potential鈥.

鈥淚f we want take full advantage of our own future, we need an overall strategy to prioritise what the community and economy need from 精东视频,鈥 Professor Holmes said.

鈥淥therwise, complacency and lack of vision will leave our future up to pure luck.鈥

The report focuses on four key areas of 精东视频; education, knowledge, innovation and influence. Within these areas it recommends ways to:

  • build competitiveness
  • support high quality education and training
  • maximise research potential and, strengthen international engagement

The recommendations also note the science strategies which have guided other countries, particularly Asian nations, leading to large economic and societal benefits.

In launching the recommendations today, the Chief Scientist Professor Ian Chubb pointed out that Australia is the only OECD country without a science or technology strategy.
