Message from the President

April 30, 2025

Celebrating excellence in ¾«¶«ÊÓƵ is not difficult, and this time of year is especially joyous as we celebrate our annual honorific award winners.

The Academy’s honorific awards recognise outstanding contributions to the advancement of science across the career spectrum, and this year is no exception. My warmest congratulations to the 22 awardees.

Their work – from fighting breast cancer, antibiotic resistance and climate change, to understanding the evolution of Earth and how galaxies are formed – showcase the diversity and depth of Australian research and exemplifies how science is being used to improve lives and strengthen societies. Together with our funding opportunities, the Academy is proud to support these awards and excellence in research. You can read about the awardees’ scientific advances in this month’s newsletter.

Earlier this month the Academy announced the establishment of a Global Talent Attraction Program. We are leading a national, coordinated effort to attract talented scientists wishing to leave the United States.

Australia has an urgent and unparalleled opportunity to attract talented scientists who can embed their skills here and nurture the next generation of scientists and innovators.

I arrived in Australia in 1990 and have been proud to call Australia home ever since. I have experienced first-hand the benefits of building a career in science here.

We know demand for the Global Talent Attraction Program is growing and I invite funders to contribute to the program to enable its expansion and to leave a profound and nation-building legacy. I hope you will consider joining us.

Australians will cast their vote this weekend and we’ve been listening carefully to politicians and what they support. Much has been said about energy, critical minerals, farming, nutrition and even vegemite. Each of these remarks and election commitments rely on science. Politicians talk about and rely on science every day, they just use different words. Take a look at these examples on our website, and follow along on our social media channels.

I hope you enjoy this edition of the Academy newsletter, and stay tuned for further updates on the Academy’s initiatives and efforts to support Australian scientists and science.
